The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has announced a citywide walkout on April 1st.
Although “Day of Action” activities are planned throughout the City all day, the main rally will be at the Thompson Center at 4:00 PM followed by a march through the Loop from 4:40 to 6:30.
The anticipated route is LaSalle north to Wacker, Wacker east to Michigan, Michigan south to Monroe and Monroe east into Grant Park.
Protesters have been gathering at University campuses in preparation for coming downtown for the main rally at Thompson center. The largest gathering is at NEIU with approximately 5000 students. A small number of buses (50 people per bus) will take faculty to the main rally at Thompson center about 2:00 PM. Students may take the Brown line to the rally.
About 700 protesters are at Chicago State University.
Earlier protests at local schools and other locations have largely dispersed.
Smaller protest groups are leaving their initial protest sites and are beginning to make their way towards the Central Business District at this time. Some have arrived at City Hall and the Thompson Center but most are not expected to arrive until around 2:00 pm.
Buildings in the Central Business District should be prepared for protest activity, especially around government buildings and financial institutions. The evening rush hour downtown is likely to be impacted.
