Identifying a suspicious package
Packages with the following characteristics may be suspicious:
- Excessive Postage
- Handwritten or poorly typed addresses
- Misspellings of common words
- Incorrect titles or title without a name
- Marked with any threatening language
- Strange return address or no return address
- Not addressed to a specific person
- Postmarked from a city or state that does not match the return address
- Marked with restrictions such as “Personal” “Confidential” or “Do Not x-ray”
- Excessive packaging material
- Powdery substance felt through or appearing on the package
- Oily stains, discolorations, odor
- Lopsided or uneven envelope
Packages with the following characteristics may contain a bomb:
- Untended or left behind packages
- Ticking sound
- Excessive weight
- Protruding wires or aluminum foil
- Oily stains, discolorations or odor
Steps to take after discovering a suspicious package
- Immediately report to your security office/local authorities
- Warn others and evacuate the area
- If appropriate or advised by authorities to take cover – do so from a safe distance, locate a sturdy table, desk and try to stay in an enclosed windowless room to avoid flying debris

- Who or what you saw
- When you saw it
- Where it occurred
- Why its suspicious
Do Not
- Handle, open or shake the item
- Empty the item’s contents
- Move the item
- Smell or taste
