The City of Chicago has placed an order for 3,057 new face shields for police officers. The contract was awarded for Super Seer Corp., based in Colorado. This is the first contract to be awarded by Mayor Emanuel without City Council approval or contract bidding.
The shields that have been purchased will fit over gas masks and protect officers from any liquid that may be thrown at them. The shields are not only thicker and larger than the current ones but also have a liquid seal at the top.
Fraternal Order of Police President Mike Shields believes that the 3,057 will not be enough and that all 9,500 patrol officers will need a new shield.
