Titan recently attended a meeting introducing the new 1st and 18th District Commanders and would like to pass along the following information.
1st District – Commander Michael Pigott
- Lollapalooza averaged 108,000 people per day; CPD was very happy with their new initiatives (no liquids, blocking off streets, lighting, Police teams at hotels)
- Approximately 1,000,000 people per day commute downtown to work and attractions
- Robberies are down 13% YTD; there is a greater CPD presence and they are working with the BOMA and the Business Community
- 4 locations are being targeted for a homeless encampment strategy
- Physicians and social services will target a specific area for 2 weeks
- They will provide support, counseling and medical attention
- They will assist the homeless in moving to shelters
- The area will be cleaned and they will not allow the area to be taken back
18th District – Commander Daniel O’Shea
- Hubbard Street is still being targeted for fake ride share scams, strong arm robbery and ATM thefts
- CPD has a decoy program to target fake ride shares and impound vehicles
- CPD’s approach to large groups of teens is similar to protests, follow and or walk with them; arresting one person takes too many officers off the street
- There were 420 Juveniles arrested in 2017, there are 236 arrest YTD for 2018
- Out of all the juvenile arrests in the 18th district only 16.1% live in the district
- Motor vehicle thefts are mainly from keys being left in cars
- CPD is cracking down on open alcohol at North Avenue Beach, they have added tactical teams Friday, Saturday and Sunday
- CPD is enacting new policing techniques
- Moving resources to where the crime is
- Establishing a command center to review the previous 24 hrs of crime and send deployment as needed
- There are new license plate readers in place
